  • Louisiana historians are looking for volunteers to help record the story of the 1927 Mississippi River flood. Brian Davis, executive director of the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation, said written records alone do not tell everything about the event. His efforts center on Red Cross camps and informal sites where people fled to higher ground while the waters stayed high. Kiroli Park sheltered hundreds of families and served as the Red Cross camp for the local area. Residents arrived from Bastrop, Rayville, Delhi and nearby towns. Those places also had Red Cross camps and other high-ground sites where households took in others. Historians want photos, papers and the locations of camps so they can learn what families went through. Poverty Point archaeologist Dr. Diana Greenlee said the work takes time and she welcomes assistance. People who wish to help may contact the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation.
